It’s a…

The big 20 week ultrasound went well! Despite the fact that I went in to the appointment pretty positive there was a little girl in there, we discovered we are having a boy! When we saw the money shot and found out I had to wrap my head around the idea for a sec because I wasn’t expecting it. Our ultrasound tech told us that the mother’s intuition regarding the gender is almost always wrong in her experience, which I thought was kind of funny. Baby boy looks healthy and is measuring exactly on schedule to the day. He was very squirmy in there and at times a little uncooperative as the tech tried to get all of the measurements. Looks like we already have a little mover and shaker on our hands. The best was when she said “looks like baby has a big tummy! You are feeding him well.” I know it is all of the ice cream so I now have no choice but to continue on my current consumption pattern. 🙂

We got a bunch of pictures to take home, but these are just two of my favorites.

Cute little feet:

And the money shot:

Sorry kid for posting a picture of your goods for all to see, I’m sure you’ll forgive me for being excited. Now let the fun begin of decorating the nursery, registering for little boy things, and deciding on a name. We are so happy that he is healthy and everything looks good, and that now we can refer to him as “he” instead of “it.” It’s getting real now, there’s a baby boy in there!

Halfway there! Whew! Baby is the size of a banana and now has working tastebuds.

Photo: Ugh, back to the selfie in the bathroom mirror since Steve was not home. The bump seems to be growing by the day now, and it is already getting a little more difficult to get up off the couch. I may have audibly grunted a few times while trying to get up, or put on socks, or doing any normal everyday things really. I can’t even imagine what this will be like when I am huge. To make up for that crappy photo, I give you this:

Yes, those are roller-skates. Flashback to grade school anyone? By little cousin Nora turned 8 over the weekend and had her birthday party at a roller rink. At first I wasn’t planning to skate for fear of taking myself out, but when I got there it was just too tempting. And I am happy to say that I stayed upright the entire time. Ah, so many memories.

Food: I am craving so much fruit still. Any fresh fruit, bowls of it. I’ve also been killing the green smoothies and salads. All of that makes it sound like I am eating really healthy all of the time, but fear not, my sweet tooth is still raging. Ice cream, brownies, anything chocolate, girl scout cookies, nothing is safe around me.

Movement: Yes! I was starting to worry a little bit that I couldn’t feel the baby moving much even though my doc said it was perfectly fine and normal. Well, for the past two days I have felt so much action in there. In fact, the kid seems to be having a little party in there as I type this. It’s pretty wild. The movement is more subtle than I was expecting (and that I’m sure it will be as the baby grows), but it is now unmistakeable and I love it.

Exercise: Meh. I think I worked out four days last week. Running is not comfortable which totally bums me out. I tried using a support belt for my 4 mile outdoor run the other day, and it did help a little, but I have had to accept the fact that running is just not going to feel good until after July. I am going to keep at it anyways, but I know I am going to have to start incorporating more different types of workouts. Mostly I am just lazy and running is so convenient. Got forbid I make the five minute drive to the gym. Walking is starting to grow on me, and I have noticed my “power walking” pace has increased when I walk outside.

In other news: The big ultrasound is tomorrow!! I feel like I have waited for this day for so.freaking.long. At the same time, the weeks are flying by at lightning speed. I have to admit I am a little bit nervous for the big appointment and above everything hope that we see a perfectly healthy little baby in there that is developing right on schedule. With the obvious stated, I also have to say that I really really hope the little one cooperates and flashes the goods for us. I am so excited to find out if a little boy or girl is in there! Any guesses??

Baby is the size of a mango, about 6 inches long and weighing in at a whopping 8.5 oz. He/she is also very busy developing nerve cells in the brain for all five senses.

Photo thoughts: Isn’t it nice to see a photo that is not a bathroom selfie? I took advantage of the fact that Steve was home and I was wearing real clothes (rare) to snap a quick photo. Lately I have had an almost equal amount of people tell me that a) they almost can’t tell I am pregnant or b) that I am really starting to sport a bump. I guess it depends who is giving their opinion, but I certainly feel bigger by the day.

How I’m feeling: Well, I was sick for most of last week, which wasn’t fun. It was just a cold and nothing too terrible, but dealing with a drippy nose while trying to give massages at work got old real fast. I have also been so.exhausted all week. I don’t know if it’s more from being sick or if the babe is having a growth spirt and zapping my energy, but I had to partake in quite a few naps.

Highlight of the week:

Pentatonix! Steve got me tickets to this concert for Christmas, and I was not going to let a measly cold stop me from enjoying it. It was a great show, so much fun! If you are not familiar with Pentatonix, they are an a cappella group that was discovered on the show The Sing Off. The music they make with just their voices is incredible. Look them up on YouTube and prepare to be impressed!

Food: Still no weird cravings, but I am now on a smoothie kick.

Pictured is another variation on a chocolate cherry smoothie that I whipped up. It had plain greek yogurt, cranberry juice, cocoa powder, frozen banana, frozen cherries, and spinach. Delicious and packed full of nutrients. I have been on a fruit kick in general, and can’t get enough berries, pineapple, and apples.

Exercise: Welp, due to being sick and having no energy, I only worked out three times last week. Twice I did run/walk intervals on the treadmill, and I slogged through one very crappy outdoor run. Hope to turn that around this week, but the several inches of new snow we now have is not helping with my motivation.

To wrap up, I saw this on Facebook the other day and it made me laugh.

Wine. Sigh.

Baby is the size of a sweet potato, and is yawning, hiccuping, sucking and swallowing.

Photo thoughts: I don’t feel like the bump has changed too much over the past few weeks. Don’t worry, I am still gaining plenty of weight, it is just all packing itself in nicely onto my lower half. I’m going to need all of those extra stores when it comes time to breastfeed, right? If that’s the case my child will not have to worry about going hungry. Womp womp.

How I’m feeling: sick. I came down with a cold last night, and despite my wishful thinking that I could sleep it off last night, it stuck around. I went to work today but had to leave early as I didn’t think my clients would appreciate my faucet of a nose dripping on them whilst they are trying to enjoy a relaxing massage. Ewww. I decided to spare them that little pleasure. I went home and slept for two hours instead. Anyways, the cold isn’t terrible, I’m mainly just stuffed up and tired, but I never ever get sick and therefore completely suck at being a sick person. Other than the cold I have been feeling good this week.

Sleep: Dare I say it was better this week!? I don’t want to jinx anything, but most mornings I was able to sleep until around 6:30am which is a huge improvement for me. I didn’t have to take any unisom, and though I still wake up multiple times throughout the night (I’m going to go ahead and resign myself to the fact that waking up randomly is just a part of my life now), I seem to be able to fall back asleep easier. I went to bed later than usual both nights this past weekend, and I still wake up at 6:30 no matter what, so I wonder if getting less sleep those two nights contributed to getting sick.

Food: Again, no real cravings/aversions, just eating pretty normally. I am starting to feel like my consumption of sweets is getting a little out of control to the point that it is going to be very difficult to cut back down once the baby is here. I have decided to try to replace SOME of my ice cream/desserts with healthier options, therefore I am trying my best to get back on the smoothie train. I LOVE smoothies and make them all the time in the summer, but typically in the winter I am too cold and just not really craving them. Since this winter might not ever end, I decided I might as well suck it up and dust off my blender.

This was a chocolate cherry smoothie with almond milk, cherry juice, frozen banana, frozen cherries, spinach and cocoa powder. So good! And slightly healthier than Ben & Jerry’s.

Exercise: I think I got in four workouts last week, including a spin class. I hadn’t been to a spin class in about a year, so it was due time to check one out at our current gym. I didn’t love the instructor, but it felt good to get back in the saddle. I wore my heart rate monitor to gauge my effort, and was surprised at how hard I had to be working to get my HR into the 140’s. Makes me think I could have been working out a little harder this whole time, but I know now is not the time to be pushing things. Hopefully my cold will be better by tomorrow so I can get a workout in, because I currently feel like a slug with only one workout in the past four days.

What I’m looking forward to: Again, not to jinx things, but it is supposed to hit 30 degrees later this week and I believe the 10 day forecast even features a day or two in the 40’s. What?!? I don’t even know what those temperatures feel like any more. I can’t wait to consistently run outside. Also, going outside without my nose hairs, eyebrows and lungs immediately freezing would be nice.

Lastly, every single night I look forward to watching the Olympics. They have been on 24/7 over here since opening night last Thursday. I don’t care what event is showing, I will be watching it. My favorites are snowboarding, speed skating, and skiing, but I love them all. Luge? Bring it. Bobsled? Yes. Curling? I wish they would show it in prime time. The only event I am kind of meh about is figure skating, but I will still watch it. I just really really love the Olympics in case you couldn’t tell. Go USA!!!

How about a bare belly shot this week, shall we? I feel like the bump is bigger in person, but whatever. Baby is the size of an onion, about 5.1 inches long, and is starting to put some fat on that cute little body.

Food/cravings: nothing too out of the ordinary this week. We did eat dinner at Kopp’s the other night, where I not only had a fish sandwich and fries, but also a luscious chocolate custard cone for dessert. Heaven. I’ve just been enjoying food in general, and lots of the same old staples like fruit, cereal, eggs, and ice cream. And breaking news: I can eat sweet potatoes again! I think I could even eat squash (maybe) but I haven’t gone there yet. Baby steps.

Sleep: It’s been so bad that I broke down and tried taking Unisom. The first night I just took half of one because I have the tolerance of…um…well let’s just say I have been known to get buzzed off of one dark beer (lord help me when I am able to drink again). So I took half of one and I slept so.much.better. I still woke up throughout the night, but I was able to fall back to sleep right away and I could tell I was sleeping more deeply. The next night I took another half of one with similar results. Then, because I didn’t want to make it a habit of taking this crap every night, I went without. It was terrible. I have been making it a point also of trying not to nap so much during the day, because I don’t think it’s helping my nighttime sleep. I don’t know if I want to keep taking the stuff all the time, so for now I am going to take it periodically when I feel like I really need to get some sleep.

Speaking of all things sleep, I had a very vivid dream the other night that I gave birth to a baby boy. For some reason it wasn’t until after he was born that we even discussed names for the child. Steve ended up not liking my first choice, but he liked the second (neither of which we have talked about in real life). Then all of a sudden the baby was a puppy with the most giant puppy paws I have ever seen, so I knew that eventually this kid (puppy) was going to be huge. What does it mean??? So now I am convinced that it is a boy (hopefully human), which in reality means it is probably a girl since my gut feeling in these matters is always wrong. Gahhh! Three more weeks.

Exercise: Five workouts last week, 3 runs and 2 walks. Sometimes I only manage 2-3 miles on the treadmill, but I tell myself it’s better than nothing. I walked OUTSIDE on Sunday and ran outside today. For some reason running outside wears me out so much more than running on the treadmill. My pace is averaging between 9:30-10:00 min/mile, though during a short treadmill run the other day I ran a whole mile at sub-9 pace. Woah! I am hoping that the weather continues to stay decent enough that I can go outside and get fresh air at least a few times a week going forward. In other news, I could barely zip up my winter running jacket today. I might have to start stealing Steve’s running clothes soon.

Research of the week: cloth diapers. Yep, I am leaning heavily towards cloth diapering. After pouring over websites and watching videos on the subject, I realize that it is really no more difficult than doing disposables. Yes there is obviously laundry involved, but doing an extra load of wash every day or two doesn’t really seem like a big deal to me. The upfront cost is a little intimidating, but the savings over the long run is pretty significant. Also, a baby butt in a cloth diaper is just so darn cute.
