Please don't judge me

Because this is the internet and you are all total strangers, I am going to admit something that I probably wouldn’t admit to my friends. Actually I probably would, but I would be prepared to be laughed at, made fun of, and well, laughed at some more. It’s ok though, I tend to set myself up for ridicule in these situations. Here goes: I am slightly obsessed with David Cook. (sigh)

And American Idol has been consuming my life for the past several months. Ok, not really, but I did DVR it and watched every episode religiously. My cousin did as well, so the morning after each show we would hold in-depth phone conferences about the previous night. Who we loved, who sucked, who would go home.

David Cook was my early favorite, and he just kept getting better and better. He is the first contestant on the show ever who’s album I would actually buy. I have really liked some of the others as contestants, but I wouldn’t exactly be rushing out to buy a Clay Aiken album.

I have to admit, though I thought he wholeheartedly deserved it, I was shocked that David Cook won. I figured the little tween girl population would be voting over and over for 4 hours for 17-year-old David A, but America came through and picked the best man to win.

So what is the point of all this you ask? In my obsessive stalking internet surfing yesterday, I came upon this:

Dude already released an album. Ohmygodineedit. So I kicked my internet stalking abilities into high gear and was able to find a website to download the album. Here’s the thing. Apparently it was available for download from iTunes and Amazon mp3, but was pulled from both sites as his popularity grew on American Idol (lame if you ask me). So I had to track it down by other means…mwaaahaaahaaa!

Let me just tell you this. I am listening to it right now and it is a-maz-ing. I kid you not, it is the best album I have heard in a long time. So with that, I am going to leave you with one of my favorite tracks, Silver.

Update: I have no idea if the above track is working. I have just spent the past hour trying to get it to work and I’m frustrated, so I apologize if it doesn’t work and I will try again later.

Raiders of the Lost Ark

In my preparation to see Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull on Memorial Day, I went out yesterday and rented the first three installments. I knew I had seen at least parts of these movies, but my memory was hazy at best. Something about monkey brains?

So last night we watched Raiders of the Lost Ark. I can tell you one thing that surprised me: I had never seen that movie before, as in I didn’t remember a single thing. I assumed that I had surely seen this movie at some point in my life, so I was expecting some level of familiarity. But alas, there was no recollection whatsoever.

Now here’s the thing that really surprised me. I didn’t really think it was all that great. Maybe my expectations were to high (seriously, everyone around me is so excited for the new movie to come out). While there were a few great parts that made me laugh, I actually found it to be a little long and uneventful. Not bad, but it didn’t exactly make me want to jump up and pop in TheTemple of Doom without delay. Is it just me?

So tonight I will give the next one a try. I have been told that TheTemple of Doom is the best out of the three, so we shall see. It better be good.

Sunday list

So I haven’t blogged in a while, and lets just say I’ve been a little busy. A lot has been going on, so I’m going to make a list. Here goes.

-I am getting married in less than 5 weeks (what?!?!). We had a “walk through” at our venue the other day where I was told we would have to pay $200 for 8 (eight) tablecloths for the cocktail hour. The woman must have been on crack. I told her it wasn’t going to happen. Take that!Seriously though, could I please just get married without going into major debt in the process?? I know, I know, it’s our own fault for planning the wedding we did (which is by no means extravagant in the first place), but come on, some of this stuff is just ridiculous.

-We have decided on our honeymoon destination! Drumroll please…Belize!

The bottom picture is the blue hole, and yes, we will go diving 150 feet down into that sucker! We will spend 5 nights on Ambergris Caye for the diving, and then 4 nights in the interior exploring jungle, waterfalls, caves, and Mayan Ruins. Oh, and we can rent this private waterfall for the day:

Now for the bad news. After listing out everything that we owe for the wedding, we don’t know if we can actually afford this trip. We aren’t planning to go until November, so we are going to wait until after the wedding and see where we stand.

-I went to the Y for a swim Friday morning, and I saw the most curious thing I have ever seen in the pool there. It was a man, perhaps 25-30, tall and lanky. He was wearing a shortie wetsuit in a pool where the temperature probably averages around 84 degrees. He was also wearing a bright red life jacket, mask, snorkel, and fins. He was face down in the water holding 2 floating foam dumbells out in front of him. He was ever-so-slowly making his way from one end of the pool to the other with his flippers. I wondered if he was meditating and transferring his mind to the ocean. I wondered if he saw fish. I started to imagine that I was in the ocean seeing fish. It was quite pleasant actually.

-I have gotten a lot of training in during the past few days. Friday was a brick: 1 hour swim, 1 hour bike, 45 min run. Saturday was a 3.5 hour bike. Sunday is a day of rest. I am contemplating signing up for the Trek 100 bike ride on June 7th, so I am really trying to ramp up my riding in preparation.

-Gas is $3.99 a gallon. WTF? Thank God I don’t have to drive to work.

-I am going to see the new Indiana Jones movie on Memorial Day with a bunch of people from my family. We have VIP reserved seating in the theatre, which means we won’t have to get there 2 hours early to try and get seats. In preparation, I plan to rent the first three movies today and have a movie marathon, because my recolection of these films is a bit fuzzy.

-I think that’s all I’ve got. Enjoy your Sunday!

Margarita Fest Indeed

As I mentioned, Saturday was my bridal shower. Let me just tell you, it rocked. I arrived delighted to find this scene:

That would be my awesome cousin and matron of honor Kelly, already preparing the margaritas. Everyone started to arrive shortly after, including three of my good friends (I’m second from the right):

After visiting with everyone for a while and playing a few games, it was time to get to the gift opening portion of the day. Let me just tell you, I have some awesome friends and family who gave me some way cool stuff. Here I am with my mom before the gift opening began:

And here I am with Kelly as she is documenting who gave me what fabulous gift:

My third margarita resulted in this pose with a towel:

And finally, two of my girlfriends were nice enough to surprise me with a bottle of tropical flavored lube in front of my entire family. I can still her my 89 year old grandma saying “What is that? What is it??”

After the gifts, it was time to eat! I wish I had remembered to take a picture of the food, because it was delicious. We had home-made enchiladas, guacamole, rice and beans, taco salad, rice, cake, and my favorite since I was little, broken glass jello. Yum.

It was so great to see everyone that came to the shower, and with that, I will be married in less than seven weeks. Invites are out, and I am so secretly excited to start receiving response cards in the mail. I am a dork, I know, but I can’t wait to enter everything into my guest list spreadsheet so we can start working with an actual number. Wow, that sounded nerdy. Really I just can’t wait to be done with all things wedding planning related so I can enjoy our fabulous party and get on with my life!

The rain won't get me down

It is pouring rain and I am exhausted, but I am excited for this weekend! I had a great swim this morning after pretty much a full week of slacking off. I am supposed to run today as well, but the weather looks like it has other plans for me, which is ok. It is a rest week, after all.

I just returned from the post office, where I spent $99.60 on stamps. Wedding invites are going out tomorrow, and I absolutely cannot wait until I don’t have to look at them sitting on my desk anymore. There are piles everywhere. Invites, envelopes, response cards, map cards, response envelopes. It has been making me itch for the past few days all of this clutter, and I am going to spend the afternoon stuffing envelopes and sticking stamps, turning everything into one neat, orderly pile that will go to the post office tomorrow.

Tomorrow is also my bridal shower. There will be margaritas. Need I say more? There will also be homemade enchiladas, taco salad, guacamole, rice and beans. Not mention all of the ladies I am closest to. My best friend (and also a bridesmaid) lives in California and can’t make it, so she will be missed, but I can’t wait to see her in seven short weeks for the wedding. Yikes, seven weeks! Did I mention there will be margaritas?

Then Sunday is my first outdoor soccer game of the year. Looks like it could be chilly, but hopefully it will at least be done raining by then. Well, that’s all I’ve got. Hopefully I will remember to bring my camera tomorrow so I can post some pictures of the margarita fest bridal shower. Have a great weekend!

What the?!?

I woke up early this morning and went to get out of bed. As I bent my knee, there was throbbing pain. This isn’t that unusual an occurance, so I thought back to what training I did yesterday, and my internal pre-coffee dialogue went something like this.

Oh, it must be from running. Wait, I didn’t run yesterday. Oh yeah that’s right. Well then it must be from soccer. That usually does it. Wait, I didn’t play soccer yesterday. Biking? Nope. In fact, I did not work out yesterday at all. (I take the term “rest week” very seriously).  What the hell??

Then it hit me.

Yup, that’s right. My knee is sore from a rousing 9 innings of kickball. Yes, the grade school game you played at recess. So much so that I did not run today either, and have been hobbling around like a 70 year old. Pathetic much?

Here is the headline:

“Local girl unable to compete in half-ironman due to injuries sustained while playing a playgound game invented for 10-year-olds in which you kick a big red ball and sprint around bases trying not to get hit with said ball.”

Nice. Maybe I need to cut back on the extra-curriculars.
